THE BLOODY MARY HOAX

While the drink “bloody Mary” no doubt refers to the murdering queen, the popularity of the drink may also have something to do with a substitute for the blood sacrifice. While true or not we have had some fun mentioning this idea to devotees of this drink.

Food, minor acts of blood sacrifice (for example, circumcision), liquor, special feasts and rituals have all served to take the place of the blood sacrifice. Regardless of the form of the sacrifice from simply killing an animal to decapitating a human and eating his body and drinking his blood—overt practice of the blood sacrifice has all but disappeared from the modern world.

The exceptions include pathological killers such as Shawcross, who ate the body parts of some of his prostitute victims, and heroic fictional cannibals such as Hannibal Lecter, who was obsessed with human flesh. The blood sacrifice has all but left us in the Western-White-Christian world. Or has it?

Today in America millions of people are performing the blood sacrifice using real blood instead of wine or incense sticks. This group is known as Santeria. A combination of ancient African religion and Christian symbolism, these modern day practitioners are sacrificing animals within the context of their religious belief system. While animal sacrifice is illegal—except when defined as butchery for food in licensed establishments and for animal experimentation—the growing group of Santeria has all but ignored the laws which restrict them from practicing their religion. It is estimated that their are five million devoted followers of Santeria in the United States alone.
